After a restart, Piquet was the first to pit, taking only 9.04 seconds before rejoining the race. Two laps later Mansell made his stop. As he exited the pitlane Piquet was charging down the straight. The Brazilian knew he had to get in front before Nigel’s tyres came up to temperature. They ran in tandem for a lap before Nelson made his move – only to find a slower car ahead. He braked hard and lost ground and with it went the race. Mansell took the flag and with it came an 11-point lead in the title chase.
