“Florida Backwater” By Highwaymen Painter James Gibson
Rare Monochrome Original Painting by the famed Highwaymen Artist. Depicts a backwater Florida scene. Scratch signed signature on the front of the Upson board. Although not dated, it appears to be to be fairly early in Gibson’s career. It is possible his finger print is on the back in the rear bottom right.
Features birds flying and a heavy palette that makes this collectable painting even more rare.
The brand new custom frame is outstanding. This is a great opportunity for any Highwaymen investors / collectors at this price.
A unique feature of the painting is a small hole on each side from where it was tacked to a tree and painted. This was a common scene with Highwaymen of the old. Sometimes they would paint and party with several showing up together and painting.

$2,895 plus exact Shipping and Handling. Any additional shipping cost after initial charge will be billed separately.
The Highwaymen, also known as Florida Highwaymen, were a group of 26 talented black artists that emerged as prolific painters in spite of segregation in the south in the late Jim Crow era. The Highwaymen recaptured attention in the 1990’s as more people recognized the significance of both regional art and the contributions of African American artists.
