The Lancaster piloted by F/S W. ‘Bill’ Townsend is depicted about to touch
down at RAF Scampton at 6.15 on the morning of 17th May 1943. After the
crew attacked the Ennepe Dam, they had an eventful return journey and the
port outer engine had to be shut down. After landing the battered aircraft
taxied to its dispersal and the three running Merlins of O-Orange were shot
down. Quiet descended across the airfield, Operation CHASTISE was finally
over.
